Golden 25 -- IOC Program Commission Chair #5 Franco Carraro

(ATR) Usually low-key, Italy’s senior IOC member steps into the spotlight in 2013.

Franco Carraro, 73, chairs the Olympic Program Commission for what will be its most eventful year in at least a decade.

After presentations last week in Lausanne from seven sports seeking to join the Olympic program, he and his colleagues are tasked with preparing the report that will inform the Executive Board which sports to recommend for addition in 2020 – and which to cut from the Games.

It’s all part of the IOC plan to arrive at 25 core sports.

EB members make their first proposal – which to cut – Feb. 12 to 13 in Lausanne. Their second proposal – which, if any, to add – will be made May 26 to 31 in St. Petersburg.

Both are subject to the approval of IOC members in Buenos Aires this September.

How well they listen to the Executive Board – and how well the EB listens to Carraro and company – is one of the big questions ahead for the Olympic Movement in 2013.
