(ATR) Herring and Copenhagen, Denmark will host the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships.
Denmark defeated 2006 host Riga, Latvia to win staging rights. Denmark received 95 votes at the IIHF Congress, while Latvia received just 12.
The two cities previously submitted a joint bid to host the 2017 World Championships, but lost to Paris and Cologne, Germany.
"This is a historic day for Danish ice hockey and, thinking about all the work that has gone into getting this World Championships to Denmark, I dare say that it will never be beaten," Henrik Bach Nielsen, the head of the Danish ice hockey federation, said in a release.
"Winning the World Championships in Denmark in 2018 is a landmark event for our sport."
Jyske Bank BOXEN Arena in Herring and the soon-to-be-built Royal Arena in Copenhagen will serve as the venues for the championships. The tournament will take place over 17 days from May 3-20.
Denmark has spent the past 12 years in ice hockey’s top tier having been promoted in 2002.
