Deaflympics Face Collapse
The Deaflympics face elimination from the sports calendar after Athens organizers say they cannot stage the 2013 event as planned.
The Greek financial crisis is blamed for the withdrawal.
Deaflympics CEO Mark Cooper tells Around the Rings that he was told the news Tuesday this week, just a day after the Special Olympics ended in Athens.
"We are looking at alternatives," says Cooper who received a double-dose of bad news this week when Barcelona announced it was dropping its bid for the 2017 event. Buenos Aires is the remaining candidate. Cooper is also searching for a host for the 2015 Winter Deaflympics. Poprad-Tatry, Slovakia cancelled its staging of 2011.
The Deaflympics, organized by the International Committee on Sport for the Deaf, are supposed to be held every four years. About 1500 athletes take part. Taipei was the 2009 host.
Atos Name Change
Olympic sponsor Atos Origin is now Atos after the acquisition of Siemens IT Solutions and Services GmbH.
The French information technology provider changed its name on July 1 after the deal was approved by shareholders.
The new name and brand represent Atos’ vision to create a company where people, technology and businesses work together to accelerate progress.
Atos acquired Siemens for $1.2 billion, making it the largest information technology company in Europe.
"The combination of Atos Origin & Siemens IT Solutions and Services marks an exciting evolution in the IT market. Our chance to make our mark, to write history with our clients, to introduce brand new ideas to the market, to continue powering progress," said CEO and Chairman, Thierry Breton.
The deal creates a new company with revenue of $12.4 billion with 78,500 employees in 42 countries. Both parties committed $ 71.2 million to a global partnership that will develop new products and solutions.
It is unclear if Atos has already changed its corporate imagery related to the Olympics.
Toronto 2015 Marks Four Years to Go
Guadalajara 2011 isn’t the only Pan American Games marking a milestone this week.
Four days after the Mexican host city celebrated 100 days to go on Wednesday, its Canadian counterpart is kick-starting its official four-year countdown to Toronto 2015.
"We are ready to roll up our sleeves and work with the City on delivering an event that will make us all proud," chief organizer Ian Troop said in a statement.
To mark the occasion, Toronto mayor Rob Ford will tap city councilor Mark Grimes to chair his Pan Am Games Secretariat, a post from which he will lead the host city’s participation in the Games.
Four years from Sunday, around 10,000 athletes and officials representing 42 countries and 48 sports will arrive in Toronto for the biggest multi-discipline event of 2015, a competition organizers hope will serve as a Olympic qualifier for a Pan Am record of 20 disciplines.
