More Paralympic Tickets Released

LOCOG will release 45,000 addition Paralympics tickets to satisfy public demand.

Tickets for wheelchair basketball, equestrian, track cycling, and rowing were made available to the public as well as Olympic Park and ExCeL Centre day passes.

"The Day Passes will allow people to dip in and out of sports and experience a range of sports in one day," LOCOG commercial director Chris Townsend said.

"Many people visiting the Paralympic Games will be experiencing these sports for the first time so we wanted to provide a broad experience for spectators."

So far 2.2 million Paralympics tickets have been sold. LOCOG set a goal of selling 2.5 million Paralympics tickets.

The Paralympics start August 29.

Olympic Tourism Boost

U.K. culture minster Jeremy Hunt said a tourism aspect must be part of London’s Olympic legacy.

"The Olympics should be for Britain what Usain Bolt is for athletics – something that grabs the attention of the whole world and refuses o let it go," he said at a tourismspeech earlier this week.

"We must use this extraordinary year to turbo-charge our tourism industry. To create jobs and prosperity on the back of a globally enhanced reputation. And to show that when we talk about Olympic legacy, tourism is an opportunity we seized and ran with all the way to the finishing line."

The British government will help by allocating $15.7 million of funding for promotional campaigns.

A total of $3 million will go to the "Holiday at Home" campaign designed to encourage UK Citizens to take holidays in and around the United Kingdom.

The rest will go toward the Chinese market.

"Through this new campaign, I want us to treble the number of Chinese visitors we attract, getting to 500,000 by 2015," said Hunt.

British Sport Legacy

UK Hockey and Volleyball England are among the big winners in legacy funding from the UK Sport following the London Games.

UK Hockey received $23.6 million in funding after both men’s and women’s squads reached the semi-finals of the Olympics. More than 27,000 new hockey players registered in the U.K. in the past six months.

Volleyball England received a $6.8 million grant from UK Sport.

The 7,500 tons of sand used in the Olympics will be used to build 35 beach volleyball courts across southeast England.
