Number of supporting partners increased to 24, collaborating on heat countermeasures for the
Tokyo 2020 Games
Tokyo, 15 November 2019 – The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games
(Tokyo 2020) is taking a holistic approach to addressing the effects of the heat and humidity that are
likely to prevail in Japan during the summer months when the Tokyo 2020 Games will take place.
To help drive measures to counteract the heat, with the support of its partner companies in June this year
Tokyo 2020 launched the "Tokyo 2020 COOLING Project", a programme of initiatives aimed at ensuring
the comfort and safety of all athletes, spectators, officials and volunteers at the Tokyo 2020 Games. .The
number of companies participating in the project—13 at the time of the project launch—has risen to 24
as of 1 November.
During this summer, each participating company leveraged their specific expertise and undertook various
heat countermeasure initiatives. These included the installation, in cooperation with local authorities, of
mist-type cooling devices and the measuring of the temperature differential between the inside and the
outside of cool spots equipped with shaded areas. They also featured the deployment of water sprinklers
and the test offering of products such as frozen desserts during actual events.
A review of the results of these activities showed that, although individual initiatives brought certain
benefits, their overall effectiveness was limited as a result of them being implemented in isolation. Tokyo
2020 and the project sponsors will therefore discuss ways of coordinating their heat countermeasures in
order to ensure that as many people as possible can enjoy the Tokyo 2020 Games comfortably even
during hot weather.

The company installed its "Green Air Conditioner Flex" mist-spray cooling devices at several
Tokyo 2020 test event venues and in three local districts—Tokyo’s Katsushika-ward,
Yokohama city and Kobe city—all of which concluded a special agreement with Panasonic.
These devices help decrease heat and reduce the effects of sunlight in their immediate
vicinity,
ASICS Corporation
The company will supply uniforms for the Field Cast including volunteers aimed at reducing
the effects of heat, incorporating moisture-repellent fabric and breathable mesh sections.
Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd.
The company implemented several specific heat countermeasures during a Paralympic
support event it hosted in six prefectures in the Tohoku region during July and August. It set
up cool spots equipped with shaded areas and their staff operated spray-mist machines to
cool down visitors. It is also provided drinks for visitors and breathable clothes and towels for

sprinkling water on the pavement to help cool down the area around its headquarters,
experiencing the age-old Uchimizu Biyori tradition first-hand. This helped cool the air on hot
days when temperatures exceeded 35℃.
The company also distributed about 10,000 Tokyo 2020 mascot Uchiwa paper fans to its
customers at its branches and at local summer festivals in Tokyo.
Mizuho Financial Group, Inc.

countermeasures" where they explained how to shade and insulate the sliding windows
prevalent in most Japanese homes.
Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd.
The company demonstrated several heat countermeasures at an event aimed at creating
momentum towards the Tokyo 2020 Games. These included the provision of rest spaces, the
distribution of fans and wet tissues and the installation of a heat stroke warning board
invented by DNP showing heat stress index (WGBT) values.
Earth Corporation
The company installed large and medium-sized thermal insulation tents (6m x 3m and 4m x
3m respectively) and "spot coolers" at Tokyo 2020 test events, and handed out paper fans.
TOKYO GAS Co., Ltd.
The company installed fine mist sprays at the Gas Science Museum and applied thermal
barrier paint to the canopy over the entrance.
