BADMINTONscotland launched ticket sales for the TOTAL BWF Badminton World

Championships 2017 yesterday as fans who registered for priority access got the chance

to take the pick of the seats as pre-sale tickets went live.

That’s a two-week head start before tickets go on general sale on June 6.

There is still time to sign up for priority tickets. Just go to www.glasgow2017.com to be

among the first in the queue.

The World Championships will take place at the Emirates Arena from August 21-27 next

year and will be the Scotland’s third World Championships following the successes of

1997 and 2007.

Spain’s Carolina Marin and China’s Chen Long will lead the challenge at the Emirates

Arena as both bid to complete a hat-trick of singles titles after their victories in

Copenhagen 2014 and Jakarta 2015. They may even be heading for Glasgow as Olympic

champions as gold in Rio is their big target this summer.

Glasgow’s Commonwealth silver medallist Kirsty Gilmour will be leading the home

challenge as BADMINTONscotland plans to put on an even better show than their

two-week feast of badminton in 1997 when the Sudirman Cup World Mixed Team

Championships was followed by the World Individual Championships and in 2007 when

the Sudirman Cup returned to Glasgow’s Scotstoun.

Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of BADMINTONscotland said: "The World Championships

can’t come quick enough. We can’t wait for this latest opportunity to show what a great

spectacle Glasgow can stage.

"The city has a world-class reputation for staging major sporting events and badminton is

firmly established as playing a key part in achieving that accolade.

"But to maintain that reputation we need the support of the badminton fraternity. So why

not book early and guarantee yourselves the best seats in the Emirates Arena."

Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor Archie

Graham OBE, said: "In recent years Glasgow has been home to some of the world’s

biggest and best sporting events and the World Badminton Championships certainly fits

into that category. Its arrival in Glasgow will help us build on our position as one of the

world’s top five sporting cities.

"New world champions will be crowned but Glasgow’s World Badminton Championships

will be about much more than seven days of elite competition. It will inspire the next

generation of players to fall in love with badminton helping deliver a legacy for future

generations."

Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: "Scotland has proven it is a

world-leader when it comes to sporting events over the past few years and the BWF

Badminton World Championships 2017 is sure to be another spectacular occasion on our

event calendar.

"The event will contribute greatly to Glasgow’s reputation as one of the world’s top 5

sporting cities and provide opportunities for citizens, both young and old, to engage with

the sport.

"For badminton enthusiasts, priority access tickets represent a terrific opportunity to

confirm their attendance well in advance of the championships, and ensure they have

optimum seats for witnessing the making of history from August 21-27 2017."

Simon Morton, Chief Operating Officer of UK Sport, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity

for fans to secure their tickets for yet another thrilling event in Glasgow. This follows on

from the incredible success of the Gymnastics World Championships in the city last year.

"We are pleased to be supporting this event through our National Lottery backed Major

Events Programme and have no doubt it will continue Glasgow’s fine sporting legacy in

style."

The World Championships promises to be one of the highlights in Glasgow’s 2017

sporting calendar and is being delivered by BADMINTONscotland in partnership with

Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council and with funding support from EventScotland and

UK Sport.
