As has happened on other occasions, workers at the hospital in Corozal, Sucre, reported that they have not received a salary for six months. For this reason, since last Tuesday, April 19, they started an indefinite strike.

The cessation of activities is one of the measures generally taken by hospital workers, from different areas of the country and especially those most neglected by the state, to request that they be given minimum guarantees.

That was the measure recently taken by the workers of the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes Regional Hospital in Corozal. As it became known, by means of a letter that the professionals sent to the manager of the establishment, there are at least seven specific requests that refer to late payments for different items.

According to a letter sent by hospital officials to the Union of Professional Workers and Trades in Support of Health Sector Management (Sintragesa), they have not only had to continue their work without receiving salary and other compulsory payments, but they have also suffered ill-treatment when they claim their rights.

According to the document, the times they have demanded the answers they receive are rude and threatening, for example: “If it doesn't serve you that way, resign”.

Likewise, the health professionals assured that they will inform the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation, the Ministry of Labour and the National Superintendency of Health, with a view to monitoring and initiating the respective investigations.

“These (entities mentioned above) will act as guarantors in defense of us workers. Since you temporary service companies have violated our rights and also your coercive abuses received by you phrases such as “if it does not serve you that way, resign”, a situation that violates human rights as legal workers, this is how delays in such payments take more than a semester and lead to us to all employees not to have money to pay for transportation, food, among others,” says the document.

Obligations owed to workers

According to the complaint of health professionals, they have not been paid their salaries for October, November and December 2021 and so far this year. Nor have they received the premium for June and December last year.

Workers say that they have not been paid for holidays in 2020 and 2021, medical disabilities, health and pension in September, October, November, December of last year and so far in 2022. In addition, they complain that they have not been given an endowment.

For the above reasons, the workers announced an indefinite strike that began at midnight last Tuesday, April 19 and will be in effect until they are given a solution to their situation.

According to health professionals, activities will not resume until the obligations owed to them to date are canceled.
