Last Saturday, Cienciano del Cusco beat Carlos A. Mannucci 2-0 for the tenth date of Liga 1, in a match played at the Mansiche stadium in Trujillo.
The goals of the imperial team's triumph were scored by Peruvian defender Paolo Fuentes and Ecuadorian attacker Fernando Guerrero.
In this way, Cienciano scored 21 points and ranks as the leader of Liga 1 with Sport Huancayo after playing 10 rounds of Liga 1.
One of the figures in the Cusco cast is Miguel Ángel Vargas, an archer born in Chile, who already has a Peruvian DNI, since his father was born here and his mother is Chilean. He is going through the best moment of his career in the Cienciano of the Peruvian Primera Division.
Miguel Ángel Vargas has played every Cienciano match in Liga 1. This is thanks to the fact that he does not occupy a place as foreigners in the 'Imperial' group because he is registered in the tournament with Peruvian DNI.
However, this weekend, in fact, Vargas was figured covering a penalty in the match discounts in the 2-0 away win against Carlos A. Mannucci. This is the second save since the twelve steps that the 25-year-old goalkeeper contains: the previous one was on the first date against César Vallejo in his debut under the three sticks of the Peruvian team.
Infobae called Miguel Ángel Vargas, Cienciano goalkeeper to talk about success in Liga 1 and tell about his feelings of playing in Peruvian football.
Due to your good work together with your teammates, Cienciano is the leader with Sport Huancayo in Liga 1, how do you feel about it?
For any group that starts the year working, it is always important to fight upstairs and start with clear objectives. The team is on the rise in growth and I feel that it is a little bit to the effort that has been made throughout this time.
Are you used to the height yet?
I certainly got used to it. We had a preseason there in which we started much earlier than the rest of the teams and that for me coming from the plain helped me to adapt faster to the issue of altitude.
What attracted you to come and play Cienciano?
One motivates him to come to Cienciano because it is a big team with a lot of history and without a doubt any player seduces him. I had the opportunity to be on this team, my father is Peruvian. So, I had the possibility of getting my ID card and I wasn't going to take a foreign place, that seduced me to come to Peru. It was a nice opportunity to compete for the position and the possibility to play.
Being your Peruvian dad, you already knew Peru or are just getting to know it
This is my first time, because before I had come when I was younger, I remember that I was between 3 or 4 years old to meet my family on my father's side. But it's the first time I've come to play and live.
Now that you're playing in Peru, did your father's family come to see you at a game?
My dad is very happy when I told him about the possibility of playing in Cienciano, he was very happy for me and also because he is now living in Lima and is a little closer to Cusco, by plane it is an hour. My father's family like my uncles always send me messages and they're following the matches. They are very attentive to my performance and I have felt their affection for my family. They were able to go to a game when we played against Universitario de Deportes in Lima, there was a guy with my father.
Why did your dad go to Chile?
My dad was able to play professional in Central America and came to Chile looking for job opportunities. So, you know my mother. He arrived in Chile in 1994 and my grandfather played in Alianza Lima.
What was your grandfather's name?
Gustavo Vargas, my grandfather was an archer, I don't remember the year he was there.
You found in Cienciano the regularity that every archer longs for
Without a doubt, I am very happy with the moment that I am spending personal and also of the team, as I tell you, Cienciano is going through a great time. Without lying to you, I am focused on what the club is and what we have been doing. Obviously as a player, you aspire to things and without a doubt, I would like to grow up in this club and then see what possibilities there are here in Peru or elsewhere. I trained at Universidad Católica and went out to Deportes Santa Cruz in 2017 I went out on loan in search of continuity. The goalkeeper position is a low-rotation position and I was just promoted in Catholic. In addition, the archers who were Cristopher Toselli and Franco Constanzo, great archers of good level. So, I went out in search of continuity. Then, I returned and I had to fight the position with Dituro who had a spectacular year. I came to Cienciano to compete for the job.
What did you learn from Cristopher Toselli and Franco Constanzo?
I looked at them a lot and learned from them, they are great archers and above all great people. They left me a lot of learning.
I imagine that the elimination in the Copa Sudamericana against Melgar was a hard blow, what did they do to get up and lead Liga 1 today?
It was a tough time because we had enough enthusiasm and expectation to advance and get into the group stage, but I highlighted the team's ability to recover, the mentality and I think the whole team was convinced that despite being a tight key we did well. There, the classification was not given, but playing like this and with the attitude we will have more positive results than negative ones. The key is that the whole team is psyched and perhaps that is why we were not shocked to have been left out of the South American. With regard to leadership, the group is psyched in each one to continue to improve personally and in groups and I feel that we are living this moment of going game by game, without getting dizzy and losing focus. There are things to improve both personally and in groups.
Now, Sporting Cristal is coming, what do you know about the rival?
I have undoubtedly seen the matches of Sporting Cristal, which is a team that plays very well and comes with a game idea for quite some time, without a doubt, a very difficult opponent. But we are fine and locally we can do things well. It is clear that it will be a difficult match, however, we are with all the confidence of going out to work that match and keep the three points.
Do you analyze the rivals?
When they give me the most specific information about each player, I analyze them. In addition, I like to watch football a lot, that's where I watch the league matches and you get to know and see how they define. This is a help to get an idea, they don't define what they're going to do on match day. But as I tell you, if I like to watch a lot and then be informed of the rivals.
Are you self-critical of your performance on the playing field?
Yes, I am quite self-critical, I always analyze personally after each game and see where I can improve day by day. I feel that every day I can learn something new and it can improve details.
Since you already have a DNI, would you like to have a chance in the Peruvian national team?
I feel that the selection is something where you aspire to go, but today I enjoy the moment I have with Cienciano and I am 100% focused. One undoubtedly aspires to the selection in the future, but at present, I am focused on my club and hoping to do things well both individually and in groups.
What is the relationship with Professor Gerardo Ameli like?
The coaching staff is quite intense, they live football quite intensely, I feel that they try to transmit it to the group and we have been able to receive it in a good way and it shows in the matches, the intensity that the team has there and the attitude we capture. I think we have adapted to the teacher's idea.
