The Examination Chamber of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) summoned Senator-elect Piedad Córdoba to give an affidavit on the assassination of former Conservative leader Álvaro Gómez Hurtado on June 21.
Following the request of the presidential candidate for the Salvation Movement and Gómez Hurtado's nephew, Enrique Gómez, that the hearing be held after the election period, the date of the diligence will be days after the presidential runoff (if any).
The peace court reviewed the guardianship brought by the relatives of the conservative leader, who claimed that their rights as victims had been violated because they were not allowed to attend live and live the first hearing that the Congresswoman of the Historical Pact gave.
One of the arguments that had the most weight in the determination of the special court was the quality of victims of the members of the family of the conservative leader. Judge Alejandro Ramelli was the one who stated that victims' rights should take precedence over the JEP, a position supported by lawyers Raúl Eduardo Sánchez and Gustavo Salazar. Against were Maria del Pilar Valencia and Reinere Jaramillo.
In a recent document submitted by Gómez, it was requested that the hearing of Piedad Córdoba be suspended until the end of the election campaign.
According to the right-wing candidate, being present in the Cordoba proceedings before the JEP could be frowned upon and bring media inconvenience in the upcoming contest on April 29.
“The confluence of the previous conditions, which occurred after the filing of the guardianship that gave rise to the new date for diligence, would be inappropriate in the judicial setting, could be given to misinterpretations or generate media attention that has no place in a procedure of this nature”, noted in the document.
He also indicated that, due to the commitments of the nature of his campaign, he could not have time, noting that he could not attend today's hearing because of the “We need to talk” forum. Therefore, he extended the request that these hearings be suspended until the electoral contests pass “so that the subscriber can act in representation of the interests of the investigation carried out by the assassination of Álvaro Gómez Hurtado and José del Cristo Huertas Hastamorir”.
