Fighting continues in the Kiev region with heavy Russian bombardments on towns around the Ukrainian capital such as Irpin, Makariv and settlements along the Zhytomyr highway. There are also clashes in the communities of Hostomel and Bucha.

In the past week, Ukrainian forces have reconquered cities and towns on the outskirts of Kiev, broken the siege of the eastern city of Sumy, and pushed back Russian forces in the southwest. In Irpin, one of the gateways to Kiev, authorities said they were recovering bodies in the streets and that the area was still being bombed by Russia.

For their part, the forces sent by Vladimir Putin are still resisting and trying not to give up control of the city completely, so the fighting persists.

Images on Thursday, March 31 show several injured civilians and elderly people waiting with their belongings.

Reuters journalists who entered the area between Irpin and Hostomel saw Ukrainian troops patrolling an abandoned ghost town of ruined buildings, with bodies of Russian soldiers lying in nearby fields and on the road leading to the village.

Cannon fodder! Honestly, all of them (the corpses) are just children, lying around, they are like cannon fodder that was sent here,” said Aleksander, a 34-year-old Ukrainian soldier, referring to the dead Russians.

Soldiers patrolling the village searched nearby camps and houses for weapons, ammunition, missile launchers and other military equipment abandoned by fleeing Russian troops.

Irpin Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn said that at least 200 people had died there since the war began.

At least 1,189 civilians have been killed in Ukraine, including 108 children, and another 1,901 have been injured, according to UN estimates, which warns that the real figure is probably much higher.

In addition, more than 4 million Ukrainians have fled to several European countries, and millions more are internally displaced, according to the UN refugee agency.
