Muratov presents the Nobel Prize medal to the Ukrainian refugee fund

Moscow, 22 Mar Russian journalist Dmitri Muratov, editor of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, will present the gold medal of the award to a foundation for aid to Ukrainian refugees. “Novaya Gazeta and I decided to present the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize medal to the Ukrainian refugee aid foundation,” Muratov said in a statement on the newspaper's website. The director of Novaya asked the auction houses to prepare the sale of this “worldwide known award”. The journalist explained that in the current situation the newspaper wants to help “refugees, wounded and sick children who need urgent help.” According to the latest UN data, since the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine more than 3.5 million people have left the country. In 1993, Muratov was one of the founders of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, “an important source of information on objectionable aspects of Russian society rarely mentioned by other media,” according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
