“Encintados”: Film starring Magdyel Ugaz receives criticism from the LGBTI community after first trailer

“Encintados”, a Peruvian film starring Magdyel Ugaz, Ximena Palomino and Argentina's Benjamin Amadeo, presented its official trailer prior to its release in cinemas, agreed for this May 26. However, the reaction of the public was not long in coming and, like “Until we meet again”, the film was not spared from criticism.

In this case, netizens were not bothered by the choice of the protagonists, but of the plot in question. The Peruvian-Argentine co-production, which was awarded by the Ministry of Culture and with the collaboration of Movistar, tells the story of a lesbian couple struggling to become mothers.

“Martina wants to be a mother, but she has one obstacle: she is a lesbian and does not have the financial resources. With the support of his girlfriend Sofía, he devises a perfect plan: to seduce an Argentine tourist in Cusco so that — without knowing it — he makes her pregnant. When Facundo, the involuntary donor, discovers the truth, he returns to Peru to assume his paternity and make Martina fall in love”, is the official synopsis of the film.

Immediately, the first trailer of the film directed by Peruvian filmmaker Gianfranco Quattrini generated diverse opinions on the social network Twitter, where several users criticized the plot for allegedly stereotyping lesbian or bisexual women. In addition, for taking with a humor a pregnancy not consented by a man.

“Comedy film that trivializes the LGBTIQ+ community, insists on the exoticization of Cusco as a place of rituals and seduction of tourists”, “If you are going to talk about LGTBQ, call us, ask, read, I don't know, use common sense”, “A bisexual woman can be faithful to her relationship being with a woman. They replicate the terrible stereotype of infidelity,” were some of the comments.

PRONOUNCEMENT OF THE BLOG “I AM BISEXUAL AND WHAT”

After the trailer aired, the blog “Soy bisexual y qué”, which has more than 10,000 followers on Instagram, issued a strong criticism of the film “Encintados” even though it hasn't been released yet. This same criticism was replicated on Twitter, receiving support from netizens.

“Not only does it seem to perpetuate misconceptions about bisexuality... but also about homoparental families and about consent. This goes beyond a slogan or a theory. This insults the experiences of lesbian and bisexual women in homo-parent families who are currently completely unprotected in Peru by the institutions that must protect our human rights,” she reads in her post.

“Watching this type of content hurts. Fed up. It hurts because there are mothers who have no right to their child, simply because they did not give birth to them, because they are lesbian or bisexual . It hurts because once again the woman who sleeps with men and women, uses her bisexuality to deceive. It hurts because apparently the production decided that they could tell our stories without thinking about the impact it would have on our lives, on our daily lives. Without us. Do you understand that pain? Do you mind? Do you really understand why we say that LGBTIQ+ rights are urgent?” , they added.
