Czech Republic loses Schick for repechage to Sweden

PRAGUE (AP) — The Czech Republic will miss its best striker for the World Cup repechage against Sweden after Patrik Schick was ruled out on Monday with an injury.

The attacker was summoned last week by the Czechs even though he hasn't played since February 18 due to a calf ailment.

Schick did not play for Bayer Leverkusen in the German league last weekend and the Czech national team confirmed on Monday that he will not be taken into account for the repechage.

Goalkeeper Jiří Pavlenka was also ruled out due to injury. Milan Heča and Václav Jurečka were cited as substitutes.

The Sweden-Czech Republic winner on Thursday will run into Poland on March 29 for a place in the World Cup in Qatar.

Schick has scored 17 goals in 33 matches for the national team, so his absence is a serious blow to national coach Jaroslav Šilhavý, who also has lost the starters of last year's European Championships.
