US denounces “dangerous” claims by Russia about Bosnia's possible accession to NATO

The United States on Thursday denounced the Russian ambassador's “dangerous” claims to Bosnia that Moscow would react to a possible accession of Bosnia to NATO, citing the situation in Ukraine.

In the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the destabilization of Bosnia arouses concern, all the more so given the threats in recent months by the Bosnian Serb political leader, Milorad Dodik, considered close to Moscow.

This country, divided since the 1990s war along ethnic lines of fracture, is composed of two entities, one Serb (the Republika Srpska) and one Croat-Muslim.

Asked this week on Bosnian public television (FTV) about Moscow's position in the event of Bosnia's accession to NATO, the Russian ambassador to Sarajevo, Igor Kalabuhov, replied ambiguously and warned that Russia would not stand idly by.

“We are for what Bosnia-Herzegovina decides. If one day he decides to become a member of anything, it's an internal matter. Another reason and something else (is) our reaction,” said Kalabukov, in Serbo-Croatian.

“We have shown by the example of Ukraine what we expect. We will react in the event of a threat,” he added.

For the US Embassy in Sarajevo, these comments are “threats”, which are “dangerous, irresponsible and unacceptable”.

“No third country has anything to say about security agreements between NATO and sovereign countries. We will continue to strongly support Bosnia, which is taking the necessary steps to secure a place within the community of euro-atlantic nations,” the US embassy tweeted on Thursday.
