Sandra Cuevas, mayor of Cuauhtémoc, arrived this Thursday morning at the North Prison to appear before a supervising judge, who will determine at this second hearing whether she is linked to the trial due to the charges she faces of abuse of authority, violence and robbery against two Mexico City police officers.

Upon her arrival in court, Sandra Cuevas declared “I am ready for anything, to be linked and even to go to prison. This is an injustice, it is an assault by Claudia Sheinbaum, from one woman to another woman, but I am ready for anything” and subsequently entered the oral chamber to hear the judge's determination.

Sandra Cuevas is expected to be linked to the trial, and with it the Judiciary of Mexico City will extend the suspension to hold the position of mayor of Cuauhtémoc over her, a precautionary measure that was imposed on her for three days during the initial hearing on Monday, March 14.

The other two precautionary measures that were imposed on him on Monday are to sign assistance on a regular basis and request authorization to leave the country if required.

The mayors of the Union of Mayors of Mexico City, Lía Limón, by Alvaro Obregón; Santiago Taboada de Benito Juárez; Adrián Ruvalcaba from Cuajimalpa, Alfa Eliana González, from Tlalpan and Luis Gerardo Quijano from Magdalena Contreras, appeared in front of the Northern Prison to express their support for Cuevas.

Lía Limón said they came to support Sandra Cuevas because “what is happening in CDMX is an injustice and puts democracy at risk. He added that they demand “an end to political persecution against whom we are opposition.”

During his arrival at the prison, a group of people were waiting for him with placards of support. Cuevas broke through media representatives and said goodbye to his supporters before entering the audience.

Cuevas insisted that the criminal charge against him is handled by the Head of Government with the purpose of taking control of the Cuauhtémoc mayor's office, where the Va por Mexico alliance defeated Dolores Padierna, from Morena, during the 2021 election.

This afternoon, in addition to the decision on the possible link to the process, the political world in Mexico City is watching over whether a supervising judge decides to suspend a mayor who enjoys constitutional jurisdiction from office, a situation that will open up an intense debate among political forces. Opposition parties insist that Sandra Cuevas must first be impeached in the local Congress in order to be stripped of jurisdiction.

Claudia Sheinbaum, head of government of Mexico City, said that she has not influenced the decisions taken by various agencies in the country's capital, which hold accusations against the mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Sandra Cuevas.

Sheinbaum categorically denied that any political persecution was being carried out against Cuevas, as the panista assured after attending the first hearing in the North Prison, where the supervisory judge suspended her for three days to exercise her duties as mayor.

It is an issue where there was an abuse of authority to the Mexico City police; the police were beaten, they were humiliated, there was an abuse of authority and from there it is the police themselves who file their complaint with the Attorney General's Office of Mexico City,” said Claudia Sheinbaum.
