(ATR) From fun runs to nutrition seminars, Olympic Day participants got active in organized events hosted by the world's 205 National Olympic Committees.

In the United States, more than 700 sport and educational events were organized to take place June 21 to June 30 across the country. Approximately 370 American athletes attended the numerous events.

In 2018 Youth Olympic Games bid city Medellín, more than 50,000 participants ran in a 5K. The day’s events were led by Medellín Mayor Aníbal Gaviria Correa. Colombian Olympic Committee President Baltazar Medina as well as IOC member and Colombian Minister of Sport Andres Botero were also in attendance.

The Australian Olympic Committee invited elite athletes to visit schools.

The University of Bath in Great Britain organized a Family Fun Day, featuring mobile climbing walls and free experimental sessions in a variety of sports.

Events were held at Public Beach in the Cayman Islands, featuring sports such as cycling, football, rugby, golf, darts, swimming, volleyball, gymnastics and a 5km run/walk.

At the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre in Rio, the Brazilian Olympic Committee organized clinics on five different sports – fencing, field hockey, table tennis, archery and wrestling – for around 300 children. The youngsters also had the opportunity to meet with national sports idols.

The Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) organized a walkathon at the Dohat Arad Walkway in Muharraq that drew more than 150 participants. The BOC also designated a corner for the public to engage in optional diabetes and high blood pressure tests. BOC General Secretary Abdulrahman Askar attended the events, and said in a statement about Olympic Day: "It is an opportunity to encourage the young and not-so-young, regardless of their sporting ability and their background, to get moving, learn about the benefits of physical activity, discover new sports and reflect on the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect."

Madrid’s Sport Night brought forth more than 50,000 people on Saturday. Sport Night participants celebrated Olympic Day by joining in a number of events including beach volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, football, and a fun run.

Turkey hosted a special Olympic Day this year, kicking off both the Mediterranean Games and the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The Turkish National Olympic Committee began its Olympic Day celebration at the beginning of June with a day of sporting events across the country, and an Olympic Day Run.

The Japanese Olympic Committee celebrated Olympic Day with an Olympic Concert. In downtown Tokyo, a four-day long Candle Night lit up the city with 3,000 candles.

In Bangladesh, Olympic Day participants engaged in an Olympic run followed by a cultural program arranged by the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA). The program featured events such as a wrestling competition and body building display at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

Today, IOC President Jacques Rogge presided over Olympic Day festivities at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne.Written by Nicole Bennett.
