"The Sochi 2014 Games will be accessible any time, any place, anywhere," says Sochi 2014 president Dmitry Chernyshenko of the city's plans for digital media. (ATR)(ATR) The president of Sochi 2014 says he wants to work with the "finest and most innovative suppliers in the sports world" to deliver the best-ever Winter Olympics.
Dmitry Chernyshenko used a speech Tuesday to the UK Trade and Investment 'Winning Beyond 2012' conference in Manchester to launch the procurement process for Olympic projects and highlight the opportunities for international companies.
"We will not restrict ourselves only to those with Olympic experience," he said.
"We want to see new ideas put into action – especially in the area of sustainability, environmental protection and of course information technology."
Chernyshenko pledged to run an "open and transparent procurement policy" in accordance with IOC guidelines and those of international best practice.
He also outlined what potential suppliers need to do to stand the best chance of success in the Sochi 2014 tender process.
"While price has to be a factor, we are determined to ensure that, wherever possible, all our suppliers will be 'best in class'," he said.
"We want all our suppliers to be part of the Sochi 2014 brand, not just servicing it. Potential partners should make an effort to understand fully our vision and strategic plan when they are revealed in the next few months.
"We are open to working with international suppliers, balanced with our mission to leave a human legacy of new skills and standards of professionalism in Russia."
Chernyshenko said Sochi 2014 aimed to work with partners that could help to innovate, improve and inspire.
The Sochi Olympics would be "the first truly digital Games". The finished portion of the Gazprom resort on Psekhako Ridge includes a 220 room hotel and 32 villas. (Gazprom)
"We will optimize the mobile digital opportunities that will allow hundreds of millions across the world to access real-time data and images from their mobile or fixed devices," he told the conference.
"The Sochi 2014 Games will be accessible any time, any place, anywhere."
Chernyshenko gave an overview of Sochi's plans and the progress of preparations since the Black Sea resort was awarded the 2014 Games last July.
With Sochi building most of its venues and infrastructure from scratch - at a cost of some $13 billion - Chernyshenko offered assurances that the city will be ready on time. He says all test events would be organized at least two years before the Games.
"But words are cheap. It is action that counts," he said, before highlighting the milestones hit over the last eight months, including the formation of the organizational structure.
He said construction of the Gazprom resort on Psekhako Ridge in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains is now complete, while work on Roza Khutor and Carousel resorts is well under way.
Two key transport projects – the Krasnaya Polyana Expressway and high-speed railway Adler-Grushevaya Polyana – will be completed in 2013, he added.
The detailed Venues and Infrastructure Construction Schedule is due to be submitted The IOC Coordination Commission for Sochi makes its first visit in April. (ATR) for IOC approval in July 2008.
With the first IOC Coordination Commission visit to Sochi in three weeks’ time, Chernyshenko says he is confident the IOC will see the Olympics are on schedule and within budget.
He says Sochi's ambitious plan also presents many opportunities for foreign companies to become official partners of the Games.
Sochi's marketing plan will be announced in September, he confirmed, adding that officials have been inspired by LOCOG's results in securing agreements with tier one sponsors.
London 2012 has so far signed up five top tier partners and is well ahead of any previous Olympic host city in its fundraising drive.
"Our marketing plan will indicate the sectors that are available for international partners from our second and third sponsorship tiers," Chernyshenko said, indicating that these are below "our own national tier one".
More information on Sochi's procurement policy and tender opportunities will be posted on www.Sochi2014.com.
Tenders for infrastructure-related services will be issued through Olympstroy, the State Corporation which is overseeing all construction projects. They will be posted on www.sc-olympstroy.ru.
