A meeting of the Interministerial Commission for the coordination and supervision of the development and implementation of a test events program at the Sochi Olympic venues, during the years 2011-2014 has come to an end yesterday in Sochi.
The meeting’s Chairman, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, heard an account by Yuri Nagornyh, Deputy Minister for Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy, on the progress with preparations for the first test alpine skiing competitions. He was also given a report by Svetlana Gladysheva, President of the Alpine Ski and Snowboard Federation of the Russian Federation, on the state of readiness of Rosa Khutor Alpine Ski Resort for test competitions.
Alexander Saurin, deputy head of the Administration of the Krasnodar Region, and Igor Yashnov, deputy head of Sochi, also presented reports on the progress with preparations in Sochi and the Krasnodar Region, respectively, for the Olympic Games. Vladimir Uyba, Head of the FMBA in Russia, gave a speech on the provision of medical services at the Russian Cup and European Cup in alpine skiing in 2011. Leonid Monosov, Vice-President of SC Olympstroy, Sergey Bachin, Director General of "Rosa Khutor" LLC, Dmitry Chernyshenko, President&CEO of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, were also present at the meeting.
Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak noted that "even now, three years in advance, we can test all aspects related to the organization of major elite global competitions thus helping to ensure the success of the 2014 Olympic Games. The forthcoming preliminary testing of the Olympic pistes to be held this February at Krasnaya Polyana will be conducted in warm winter conditions, giving us the opportunity to test the technical readiness of the venue and take account of all the challenges the Game's organizers may face under various weather conditions".
The first international test competitions will be held on the slopes of Rosa Khutor Alpine Ski Resort in February 2011, amongst them, a stage of the European Cup in alpine skiing Downhill and Super Giant Slalom (February 15-18 for the men, February 22-26 for the women). Over 160 athletes from countries including Russia, Austria, Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland are expected to take part in the event. Test competitions will enable the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee to check systems and staff efficiency in the alpine skiing centre as well as the technical readiness of the facility for international competitions in alpine skiing. The Russian Alpine Ski and Snowboard Federation is responsible for the preparation and hosting of the event.
One week prior to the European Cup event, a stage of the Russian Cup in alpine skiing will be held at the slopes of Rosa Khutor Alpine Ski Resort, from February 9-13.
Svetlana Gladysheva, President of the Alpine Skiing and Snowboard Federation of the Russian Federation, underlined that "the primary purpose of the test competitions being held this February is to test the Olympic pistes. The Alpine Complex and the alpine skiing competitions are the most complicated to prepare and stage, and that’s why we are paying special attention to the athletes' safety. Whether the competitions succeed or not, depends on numerous factors, from the weather conditions to the state of the piste. But the most important thing is that Rosa Khutor will be a domestic piste for Russian athletes. The earlier they start training at this unique venue, the higher the chances of them achieving excellent results at the 2014 Games".
Brief
First test competitions in alpine skiing to be held in Downhill and Super Giant Slalom.
Downhill requires the longest pistes of all the various types of alpine skiing competition; the athletes reach the greatest speeds (up to 120 km/h). The athletes take turns to complete the course, with the fastest time winning.
Super Giant Slalom combines Downhill and Giant Slalom. In Super Giant Slalom the speeds reached are as high as those in Downhill, but the path of the course is similar to that in slalom. Athletes must go past gates placed at almost the same intervals as in Giant Slalom. Only one attempt at the course is allowed.
Rosa Khutor Alpine Ski Resort, where the first test competitions will take place, is a single venue for the hosting of all the Alpine Skiing disciplines: Downhill, Combined (downhill and slalom), Giant Slalom and Super Giant Slalom. All the slopes were developed by Bernard Russi, a world-renowned ski architect from the International Ski Federation (FIS).
Rosa Khutor Alpine Ski Resort will be an all-year-round resort where the construction of a number of Olympic venues is planned, including an Alpine Ski Centre, a Snowboard Park and Freestyle Skiing Center and a Mountain Olympic Village. Compagnie des Alpes, with its experience in managing similar venues in the Alps, will manage Rosa Khutor Alpine Ski Resort. In February 2012 and 2013 Rosa Khutor will host the next sets of test competitions, which on those occasions will be stages of the World Cup in alpine skiing.
