Governor Deval Patrick today signed into law Senator Eileen Donoghue’s legislation to study the feasibility of hosting the 2024 summer Olympics in Massachusetts. Senator Donoghue’s resolve builds an eleven-member commission charged with analyzing all aspects of the Olympics Games, including infrastructure, transportation, security, lodging, locations, costs, and job creation.
"I am delighted that the Governor has signed this piece of legislation into law. We all recognize that time is of the essence here, and I am confident that the commission will do an excellent job over the next few months closely examining all aspects of hosting the Olympic Games and analyzing its costs and benefits," said Senator Donoghue. "I look forward to participating however I can and learning about whether hosting the Olympics is the right answer for the Massachusetts economy and its people."
The Olympics feasibility commission members will be appointed by the Governor, Senate and House leaders, and the Mayor of Boston. The resolve calls for the commission to hold its first official meeting by Nov. 15, 2013 and to complete its report by March 1, 2014. The United States Olympic Committee has expressed a desire to have a short list of potential host cities by the end of this year. It will decide which city to recommend in 2014.
