Sochi 2014 Boosted by Full Support of Russia’s Major Political Parties

Moscow, Russia, June 20th, 2007 – With only two weeks remaining until the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decide on the host city for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the Russian Candidate City of Sochi received a welcome boost as all major political parties in Russia united together in expressing their full support for Sochi 2014.

Cross party political support is an important criterion in the IOC’s selection of a host city, so the news that Head of the United Russia Party Boris Gryzlov, Head of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Gennady Zyuganov and Head of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia Vladimir Zhirinovsky had all expressed their official support to Sochi 2014, could not have come at a better time.

Boris Gryzlov, Gennady Zyuganov and Vladimir Zhirinovsky issued a letter pledging their support:

“We assure the International Olympic Committee that we will actively contribute to ensuring that all of the requirements are met in order to make the Sochi Olympic and Paralympic Games 2014 a success.

To this end, the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation will ratify the Olympic Law with our support, which will assure the existence in the Russian legislation of all norms regulated by the IOC.”

All Russia’s major political parties’ backing complements the unqualified support that has been provided to the Bid by the Government and serves as a further guarantee of risk-free for the IOC.

Sochi 2014 Bid CEO, Dmitry Chernyshenko, commented:

“A successful Games in Sochi is a goal that has united our entire nation, right across the political spectrum. Politicians have joined with the general public to lend their wholehearted support for our Bid and we can confidently state that there are now 143 million passionate winter sports enthusiasts looking forward to hosting a unique and once-in-a-lifetime Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.”
