The defense team for OscarPistorius requested an early adjournment on Monday following the Olympian's emotional opening testimony.

An exhausted Pistorius began his testimony with an apology to the family of Reeva Steenkamp.

"There hasn't been a moment since this tragedy happened that I haven't thought about your family," the Paralympian said as he took the stand, "I was simply trying to protect Reeva.

"I can promise you when she went to bed that night, she felt loved. I’ve tried to put my feelings in words to you several times, but no words ever sufficed."

The double-amputee broke down before adding, "I don't want to hold a fire arm again...I don't want to be around firearms again."

Pistorius' defense team tackled elements such as the Olympian'sknowledge of South African gun laws, his history of firearm purchases, and his experience with violence in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The defense is also expected to address testimony from four neighbors who said they heard a woman's screams coming from the Paralympian's home the night he shot Steenkamp.

ABC News sources predict the defense will focus on "the ballistics and the pathologist's report."

Globe and Mailreporter Geoffrey York saysPistorius will address "his decision to shoot without asking questions" and arguments with Steenkamp prior to Valentine's Day of 2013.

Pistorius is charged with the premeditated murder of his late girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The Olympian says he thought she was an intruder in his Johannesburg home.

On March 3, Pistorius pleaded not guilty to one charge of murder and a firearms charge associated with Steenkamp's killing. If convicted, Pistorius faces 25 years in jail.

Judicial officials predict the trial will conclude on May 16.
