Buenos Aires is officially in the race to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

On Thursday, bid officials signed documents accepting IOC rules and protocol for the bid.

"Buenos Aires’ youthful population provides the city with amazing energy, vibrancy and creativity," said Buenos Aires Mayor Mauricio Macri.

"With our ambition, clear focus on youth and passion for sport, Buenos Aires can be an excellent host for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games," he added.

Macri and Argentine Olympic Committee president Gerardo Werthein both signed the document.

Glasgow; Guadalajara, Mexico; Medellin, Colombia; Rotterdam, the Netherlands and Poznan, Poland are the other five cities in the race launched March 1.

October 15 is the next deadline in the race. All cities must submit their formal candidature files to the IOC.

On Wednesday head coach Mano Menezes released thepreliminary roster of players for the Olympic qualification tournament.

The 51-player list included Ronaldinho and 16 other big-name footballers over the age of 23, including Julio Cesar, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Daniel Alves and Hulk. Each country is allowed three footballers over the age of 23 for their Olympic squad.

A final 18-player roster will be announced on July 6.

UAE Qualifies for Olympics in Football for First Time

The United Arab Emirates earned its first Olympic berth in football on Wednesday.

Dismal Medal Chances for Pakistan

The president of the Pakistan Olympic Association Syed Arif Hasan says "there is almost no hope of a medal," for his country at the London Olympics.

Speaking to local media, Hasan said: "Only the hockey team has sealed its berth, our athletes and boxers have failed to impress in the qualifiers and by the end of next month we will have a clear picture of how many actually qualified.

"At this juncture we are only relying on wild card entries which means there is almost no hope of a medal."

"I feel there is talent in the country, but the question remains what are we to do with the talent? Unless there is proper coaching and guidance and foreign exposure, we simply cannot compete in major competitions."

Goodluck Jonathan, president of Nigeria, will become the "Grand Patron" of the Nigerian Olympic Committee.

Nigerian media report that Jonathan will receive the honor at a gala on March 27.
