Ironman 70.3 is at the forefront of a busy sporting autumn for Antalya as the stunning coastal Turkish province continues to establish itself as a hot-spot for world class sporting events.
With the ITU Triathlon World Cup and the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour having already taken place this month, and the Turkish Airlines Open (golf) coming up in November, Antalya is currently gearing itself up to welcome the Ironman 70.3 race to Turkey for the first time.
The demanding race will take place in the town of Belek right on Antalya’s magnificent coastline. Contestants will gather at Belek’s sandy beach for the opening 1.9km swimming challenge, before embarking on a 90km cycle through Antalya’s scenic countryside. Participants will then have to complete a 21km run across the Gloria Golf Club before crossing the finishing line at the world famous Gloria Sports Arena.
Opened in January 2015, the Gloria Sports Arena is home to the Mediterranean’s largest multisport complex. In its first year, the complex has already hosted a number of high-level Olympic meetings and international sports events. Amongst these was May’s EOC Extraordinary General Assembly.
Speaking from Belek, Gloria Sports Arena Project Manager, Elif Özdemir, said:
"We are delighted to welcome Ironman 70.3 to Turkey for the first time. Antalya has always been a fantastic destination for outdoor sporting events, not only for the organisers but also for the participants. On behalf of the Gloria Sports Arena, I would like to wish all those taking part in this wonderful event the best of luck. We hope that the stunning setting will help contestants make it across the finishing line as they are pushed to the limit by this challenging event".
Triathletes from 50 different countries are expected at the event, which will be the last Ironman challenge of the year. Between participants and fans, approximately 5000 people are expected to visit the region for the race.
