An extra end 6-5 win over Italy for Norway and a one-sided seven-end, 9-3 victory for Scotland over Switzerland means that these two teams join Canada, who sat out Friday afternoon's session, on two wins and no losses after three sessions of men's play at the World Junior Curling Championships in Sochi, Russia. Against the Swiss, Scotland were in control throughout, and skip Kyle Smith was making all the shots, producing an official statistics rating of 95%. The Scots opened with last stone advantage and used it to score two points in the first end. After this, the Swiss, who were hampered by a last-minute line-up change due to a collision while they practised that saw alternate Kevin Keller replace lead Patrick Poli, blanked the second end, and could only take a single point from the third end. In the fifth end, Swiss skip Andre Neuenschwander tried to draw round a collection of Scottish stones but came up short to give Scotland a steal of one point and a 5-1 half-time lead. Later, in the seventh end, Smith played a precision weighted pick-out to kick out a Swiss stone partially frozen on one of his own, while his shooter stayed to add to the three Scottish stones already in the house. With this score of four points and a 3-9 deficit overall, the Swiss conceded. Scottish skip Smith reflected afterwards: "That was a solid performance in every part of the game, we just out-played them." Despite scoring two points in the third end for an early 2-1 lead, Italy never really broke away from Norway, who hauled themselves back with a score of two points in the fifth end and a steal of one point in the seventh end to take a 5-2 lead. Eventually, Italy scored two points in the tenth end when skip Amos Mosaner's hit and roll just stayed inside a Norwegian stone on the wing to force an extra end. But in the extra end Norwegian skip Eirik Mjoen made a nice hit and roll with his first stone to set up the one point needed for Norway to claim victory. Afterwards, a pleased Mjoen said: "This feels great, the boys are getting more comfortable being at the World Championship, and it feels great to win here. We've put together a pretty good team and we're hoping for success - we are aiming for the top five." In the other two games of the session, Sweden had a comfortable 11-4 win over the Czech Republic, finishing with the flourish of four points in the ninth end, a score that persuaded the Czechs, who now prop up the table on three losses, to concede defeat. At the same time, playing their third game of the Championships, Russia recorded their first win, beating China by 9-4, thanks to a good start that saw them score two points in the opening end and then steal a single point in the second end. When they scored three more in the fourth for a 6-1 lead, the writing was on the wall for China, who duly conceded after the ninth end. Speaking about his first win of the week, Russian skip Evgeny Arkhipov said: "We feel great. It was quite difficult psychologically, but we made it. The second end was the turning point - we got one and after that they were broken." RESULTS Session 3: Sweden 11, Czech Republic 4; Scotland 9, Switzerland 3; Italy 5, Norway 6; China 4, Russia 9. Standings after 3 sessions: Canada won 2, lost 0 Norway 2-0 Scotland 2-0 Italy 2-1 Sweden 2-1 USA 1-1 Russia 1-2 China 0-2 Switzerland 0-2 Czech Republic 0-3.
