Copenhagen celebrates the Olympics

The countdown to the IOC’s choice of host city for the 2016 Olympic Games has begun and the anticipation will be at its highest during the days leading up to 2 October. And, both residents and visitors are invited to the party. Under the banner of Copenhagen Olympic Festival, there will be numerous activities for both children and adults throughout the city that showcase an active society and Denmark’s unique sports association life.

The 121st IOC session and the XIII Olympic Congress takes place in Copenhagen 1 – 9 October 2009.

Celebration at Rådhuspladsen, the City Hall Square

The events will culminate with a mega Olympic party, Copenhagen Countdown, at the City Hall Square on the 1st and 2nd October. All are welcome to watch on outdoor giant screens which city will run away with the title Host City for the 2016 Olympic Games – Chicago, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro or Madrid. There will also be all kinds of sports activities at Rådhuspladsen where kids and teens can play hockey with professional players, play street soccer and street basketball with their friends, try squash on a air-filled squash court and try a variety of other sports activities. The large stage will host live music performances by top Danish artist.

The children’s Olympics

In addition to Copenhagen Countdown, 10-12,000 Copenhagen public school students from the 4-6 grades will compete in various athletic disciplines during the school-Olympics. Moreover, there will be a football dribbling tour making its way around Copenhagen and to Streetmekka, the new multi-cultural youth center for street basketball, street dance, parkour and DJ school.

Copenhagen Olympic Festival (28.09 – 9.10 2009)

A number of sporting events will attract Copenhageners to the national and international event – Olympic Congress in Copenhagen. The events will profile Copenhagen and Denmark’s unique sports model that creates a society with active children and youth.

Copenhagen Olympic Festival is a collaboration between these partners: Sports Confederation of Denmark (DIF), City of Copenhagen, the Capitol Region of Denmark, the Danish Year of Sport 2009 and Wonderful Copenhagen.
