Competition Opens for Central American and Caribbean Games

(ATR) The first medals were awarded Sunday in the Central American and Caribbean Games, taking place in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

At the end of the first day of competition, Venezuela tops the medal tally with 23 medals, five gold. Host Puerto Rico is fourth with 13 medals. Eleven countries have earned medalsso far.

Other sports with medals on the first day included fencing, judo, swimming, and weightlifting.

Badminton, bowling, diving, handball, softball, squash, and volleyball are also underway with preliminary rounds,

Sunday ended with the opening ceremony, held after a 24-hour postponement. A stormSaturday hours before the ceremonycaused damage to the site, Five people were hurt in the storm at the stadium.

The ceremony celebrated Puerto Rico’s culture and history, with popular Puerto Rican musical artists serving as the highlight of the show. Rain fell for a few minutes at the start of the ceremony although it did nothing to dampen the spirits of the nearly 20,000 spectators who filed into Centro American Stadium. A noisy din of vuvuzelas, whistles, and thundersticks was heard throughout the ceremony.

Delaying the ceremony impacted attendance from the athletes. About 5,000 athletes from 35 countries are representedat the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games but most delegations were represented by a portion of their athletes.

Puerto Rico made sure to show their enthusiasm with a couple hundred members of the team marching in the ceremony.

Medals in eight sports--bowling, diving, fencing, rhythmic gymnastics, roller skating, shooting, swimming, and weightlifting—are up for grabs on Monday.

The Games conclude July 31.
