Buenos Aires, Argentina, 16 October 2012. The Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games Bid Committee has delivered its Candidature File to the International Olympic Committee [IOC] in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Candidature File was delivered ahead of the IOC deadline on 15 October 2012.

Buenos Aires 2018’s Candidature File was submitted by a delegation led by bid General Manager Martín Gómez Tena, together with bid Communications Manager María Martha Ambrosoni.

The Buenos Aires 2018 Candidature File communicates the city’s unique vision for the Youth Olympic Games [YOG] and how the Olympic Movement and the world of Olympic sports would benefit greatly from the YOG coming to Buenos Aires in 2018.

Helping the youth of the world engage with Olympic sport is a key priority for Buenos Aires 2018 and hosting the YOG in the Argentine capital city would make it a unique international event for the Olympic Family and young athletes to celebrate Olympic values, help nurture sporting talent and it will reaffirm the importance of education and culture to help young people realise their full potential.

To celebrate the submission of the Buenos Aires 2018 Candidature File, Buenos Aires city launched this week the ‘Porteños Games’ – a multi-sport event aimed specifically to help young people increase their Olympic sport participation and deepen their connection to Olympism.

More than 1,800 young people will take part in the ‘Porteños Games’ over the course of a week until its closing ceremony on 22 October, with the participation of Olympic athletes and Buenos Aires City authorities. This event demonstrates how a strong passion for sport is fully embedded into the Buenos Aires community.

Gerardo Werthein, President of the Argentine National Olympic Committee, said:

"The Youth Olympic Games have been enjoyed immensely since the world gathered in Singapore in 2010. Buenos Aires believes it is now in the ideal position to be a valuable partner to the IOC to further advance the reach and impact of the YOG leading up to 2018 and beyond.

"Sport and the values of Olympism can play a crucial role in improving the lives of young people. Using the right media and channels, it is our firm pledge to the Olympic Movement to ensure the special message of Olympism resonates powerfully with the audience that matters most – the athletes, sports fans and Olympians of the next generation.

"With our bid for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, we want to show how our passion for sport, our cultural diversity and economic prosperity can help achieve our goal to connect the Olympic Movement with millions of new, young hearts and minds in Argentina and across South America."

Mauricio Macri, Mayor of Buenos Aires, added:

"The 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires will offer a fully integrated and deeply fulfilling sporting, cultural and educational experience for young people".

"Buenos Aires is a city that is compellingly rich in culture, warm with Latin hospitality and will provide all young people, the global citizens of tomorrow, with a profoundly enriching experience that will captivate their imagination, fill them with energy and confidence and inspire their future sporting lives".

"It would be a great honour for everyone in Buenos Aires to welcome the Olympic Family and the world’s young sporting talent to our city in 2018."
