(ATR) The 2022 South American Games head to the home of the president of the South American Sports Organization (ODESUR).
ODESUR awarded the 2022 Games to Asuncion, Paraguay unanimously today in a meeting in Paraguay. It is the first Games awarded under President Camilo Perez, who is also the Paraguay Olympic Committee President. In addition, ODESUR awarded Rosario, Argentina the 2021 South American Youth Games. Rosario is known for being the birthplace of football superstar Lionel Messi.
No other cities bid for either Games, according to an ODESUR spokesperson.
"Our athletes will be able to compete in two beautiful cities where sports culture is present everywhere," Perez said in a statement. In the next five years our region will have many first-class competitions, which will allow us to promote the Olympic spirit, especially within the youth."
Asuncion previously sought the 2017 South American Youth Games, which were awarded to Santiago, Chile. Santiago was subsequently awarded the 2023 Pan American Games by Panam Sports.
The 2022 South American Games will be the first multi-sport Games that Asuncion has hosted. The 2018 edition of the Games will be held in Cochabamba, Bolivia featuring more than 4,000 athletes in 35 sports.
Rosario will host the 2021 South American Youth Games two years after hosting the 2019 South American Beach Games. The 2017 Youth Games featured 1,200 athletes in 24 sports.
