(ATR) The Guam National Olympic Committee is bidding to host the 2019 Pacific Games.

The GNOC president Ricardo C. Blas tells Around the Rings that the bid package was sent to the Pacific Games Council Executive Director on July 27.

Blas says that the GNOC has an appointment with Guam Governor Eddie Calvo on Aug. 1 "who will then determine if we move forward or not".

"We also recognize the fact that in 2019, Guam will have a new Governor and why it is important to bring those political parties into the scheme of things so that both sides of the political parties are supporting the games," Blas adds.

Guam hosted the 1999 South Pacific Games and Blas says there would be no major projects needed to get ready for the 2019 Pacific Games.

"We are taking the position that no venue will be built, the only requirement is to dress up the venues in preparation for the Games," Blas said.

Samoa has already reported interest in hosting the Games, which were originally set to take place in Tonga. But the Pacific Games Council was forced to terminate Tonga’s host agreement after the country’s government announced its withdrawal from hosting in May.

Tahiti is said to also be mulling a bid. The deadline for applying is July 31.
