(ATR)One year ago today, Tokyo was elected the host city of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The IOC selected Tokyo as the host city for the 2020 Games during its 125th Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Tokyo succeeded in its bid for the Games over Istanbul and Madrid.
"Itis no exaggeration to say it was the most unforgettable moment of my life,"Yoshiro Mori, president of Tokyo 2020, said to Around the Rings, reflecting onwhen IOC President Jacques Rogge announced that Tokyo would host the 2020 Olympics
Mori served as a member for the bid committee, and became president of Tokyo 2020 in January. Since then, Mori says the organizing committee has been working diligently to prepare for the Games.
"In June," Mori said, "we welcomed the IOC Coordination Commission to Tokyo for its inaugural inspection visit, and we were delighted to learn that the commission evaluated our preparations thus far very highly."
Mori went on to say that in 2020, he hopes "people across the world will come to see the Olympic and Paralympic Games as a symbol of hope for the future of all humankind."
"Our ‘All Japan’ team is already working tirelessly to ensure that all visitors to Tokyo for the Games will experience the warm and sincere hospitality for which Japan is renowned," Mori concluded. "[The team] is exerting the utmost efforts towards the delivery of a Games that will go down in Olympic history as one of the greatest ever."
New Commissions for Tokyo 2020
ATR understands that Tokyo 2020 will announce the formation of media and athlete commissions next week.
A Tokyo 2020 Executive Board meeting takes place at the ANA InterContinental Tokyo on Sept. 12.
"The purpose of establishing those commissions is to obtain advice from experts in preparation of the Tokyo Games," a spokeswoman told ATR.
"Final approval of the members of the commissions will be made during the EB meeting."
The chairs and composition of the commissions will be announced at the press conference following the EB.
Tokyo 2020 said one of the top agenda items is the "application to the Cabinet Office for approval to operate as a public interest incorporated foundation".
