(ATR) Hamburg’s bid is claiming a world record after more than 10,000 people formed giant Olympic rings in a city park to show support for the city’s 2024 aspirations.
With voting papers sent out to city residents for the Nov. 29 referendum that will decide the fate of the bid, Hamburg hopes the huge turnout of people at the Stadtpark on Sunday will encourage other city residents to vote ‘yes’ to the Olympic campaign..
The chief adjudicator of Guinness World Records in London was on hand to officially confirm the world record number of people combining to create "the largest human Olympic rings".
"I’m overwhelmed by the strong support from the citizens of Hamburg and of the entire region," said Nikolas Hill, CEO of Hamburg 2024.
"It is an impressive demonstration of the city’s enthusiasm for the games and a warm invitation to the Olympic community from Hamburg’s citizens."
The anti-Olympics lobby reportedly spelled out the word ‘No’ but they were outsmarted by Olympic supporters who added a ‘W’ to turn it into ‘NOW’.
For the Hamburg Olympic bid to proceed, 20 percent of 1.3 million citizens must support the bid - the equivalent of 260,000 yes votes.
Budapest, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome are also vying for the Olympics but none of Hamburg's five competitors have committed to a referendum on their bids.
