“In politics, the gaps are filled”: Noroña ended the PRI, PAN and PRD for escaping the lithium debate

The deputy of the PT, with a smile on his mouth, pointed to the “traitors” who voted against the Electricity Reform and who, a day later, left the session room because they were going to lose the vote

Gerardo Fernández Noroña, federal deputy for the Labor Party (PT), mocked the Going for Mexico coalition after they left the ordinary session at which the Mining Law Reform (LM) was discussed.

This Monday, April 18, inside the parliamentary precinct, the new initiative of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) to make lithium an exclusive use of the Mexican State was discussed and approved; however, when they were overrun, the coalition organized by Claudio X. González and Gustavo de Hoyos Through Yes for Mexico, he decided to leave the Chamber and flee to any exchange of ideas regarding energy sovereignty related to this mineral.

With a smile on his face, the deputy representing Iztapalapa ironized about the opposition that was able to reject AMLO's Electric Reform: “yesterday they celebrated as if they had won the football world cup”, but he immediately blurted out that “PRI, PAN and PRD show what they are: nothing”.

After the deputies of Va por México left the session room, Fernández Noroña criticized them for fleeing the debate

In particular, he lashed out at the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), to whom he told them that for the next elections, where six governorships will be defined, not one will be taken. He said the same for the 2023 elections, where two states will change governors and, likewise, for the 2024 presidency.

He assured that the fact that they left the session is a symptom of the “burial of the opposition” and, consequently, the promoting benches of Q4 (Morena, PT and PVEM) must act as democrats, tolerant, plural and as a majority in the Congress of the Union.

Regarding the discussion of the Electricity Reform, he assured that Va por México did not give a single valid argument or reason to stop the initiative aimed at empowering the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) in the face of private initiative. And, as for this Monday's discussion, Noroña explained that, in order to understand the need for this reform, Mexican silver must be set as an example.

Under this logic, the Secretary of the Energy Commission assured that they will seek to make lithium at the service of the people of Mexico because “that precious metal is the spearhead of the country's technological and economic development” and, consequently, “must remain under the exclusive domination of the nation.”

Among the most relevant, it should be noted that, in Article 10 of the ML, it was established that an autonomous decentralized body specializing in lithium and other mineral resources used for the energy sector should be created. This is to make it someone outside the executive branch who defines the exploration, exploitation, exploitation and all value chains in relation to lithium.

In addition to the fact that this metal is declared as a good of the nation and the State will be the sole beneficiary of it: “The exploration, exploitation and exploitation of lithium is solely the responsibility of the State, and shall be carried out by the decentralized public body determined by the Federal Executive in terms of the provisions applicable”.

Finally, with a vote of 298 demonstrations in favor, 197 abstentions and zero against, the reform to the LM was approved with the simple majority it needed. Afterwards, it was the job of the Citizen Movement (MC) to present the reservations they believed necessary to modify the initiative; however, the 4Q legislators rejected the discussion of these reservations.
