The constitutional president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), announced that starting in May, instead of reporting on the state of the Covid-19 pandemic in the section “The Pulse of Health”, which is broadcast every Tuesday at the morning conference, the progress of the process of federalization of health systems in the country.
The Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López Gatell, highlighted that Mexico has 3 months with COVID-19 down: “There has been a steady decline in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, of which four are recorded daily on average.”
That is why every Tuesday, instead of the daily report of infections and vaccinations, the president's office will report the progress of the program whereby, “those without social security, are guaranteed medical care, clinical trials and all medicines”, not just the basic picture. It will also be devoted to clarifying doubts in this regard.
He assured that just as the pandemic is facing, “there will be public health of the first order” and said that the project that had been pending with the arrival of the pandemic will be resumed.
IMSS-Welfare is a government program, which will operate, for the time being, in 19 of the country's 32 entities and provides medical services to approximately 11.6 million people in the country living in marginalized rural or urban areas. First- and second-level care services are provided in medical units.
For the former, there are a total of 3,983 units, brigades and care centers, while for the second case there are 80 hospital units where the specialties of general surgery, obstetrics, internal medicine, pediatrics, anesthesiology, family medicine and epidemiology are treated.
Until now, several states of the Republic have signed the agreement acceding them to the IMSS-Welfare program with which the Government replaces the Institute of Health for Welfare (Insabi), to give access to health services to people without social security. Among them are Tlaxcala and more recently Nayarit.
The head of government of the capital, Claudia Sheinbaum, has announced that Mexico City could join the process of federalizing health services, however, she said, health sector workers will first be consulted to determine whether or not they agree with it.
Regarding the budget that will be used for this process, the Secretary of Health, Jorge Alcocer, clarified that there will be no limits on funding, so it can grow as long as the proper use of resources is exercised through federalization with “efficiency and austerity”.
