Ukraine has almost completed the questionnaire to become a candidate for the European Union

The document is the centerpiece that would allow Kiev to formally begin its accession in June 2022

Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky said Friday that the questionnaire for Ukraine to receive the status of candidate for membership of the European Union is “almost complete”.

This was stated by the Ukrainian president in a message addressed to the nation, where he explained that the questionnaire received by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on April 8, will soon be ready.

“Today we talked with officials about the work to complete the questionnaire (...) This is a necessary stage in the preparation of our State to acquire the status of candidate for membership of the European Union, the work is almost done, and we will soon give answers to the representatives of the European Union,” said the president.

During her trip to Kiev last week, the President of the European Commission promised to accelerate Ukraine's accession to the European Union. “We will speed up this process as much as we can, while ensuring that all conditions are respected,” said Von der Leyen after handing over the accession questionnaire to the Ukrainian president.

Such a document, which is the centerpiece of the opinion that the European Executive draws up to give its opinion on the options of a candidate country to join the community club, would allow Ukraine to become a candidate for European Union membership in June 2022, as they expect it to be from the Ukrainian Executive.

On the other hand, Zelensky's diplomatic adviser and responsible for European integration, Igor Zhovkva, explained on Monday that Ukraine's entry into the Union will take place “in the coming years”, although not all members are prepared for the decision.

“Unfortunately, not all countries think the same way, but we can safely say that no country in the EU is against it. And each country has a positive trend with regard to Ukraine's attitude towards accession. Although the speed of this trend is slightly different,” Zhovkva explained.

SIGNIFICANT SUCCESSES

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, highlighted the “significant” successes against the Russian army, although he admitted a “very difficult” situation in the south and east, in addition to announcing the campaign of planting throughout the country and the re-establishment of some railway connections.

“The successes of our armed forces on the battlefield are truly significant. Historically significant. But it's still not enough to cleanse our land from the occupants. We are going to beat them more,” Zelensky said in a video this Friday night.

The “number one task is to accelerate peace,” he said, insisting that the war caused by the Russian invasion on February 24 will not end until Ukraine receives more weapons and financial support to defend itself.

He insisted that the war will end “as soon as the democratic world recognizes that the oil embargo against Russia and the total blockade of its banking sector are necessary steps towards peace.”
