Miguel Torruco called for the defense of lithium “today more than ever” after Elon Musk's tweet

In response to the proposal of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) to keep lithium in Mexican hands, several criticisms have arisen. Since it is not really necessary to legislate it, since the constitution states that natural resources in Mexico are owned by the country, to those who say that there is no necessary infrastructure.

Despite everything, the president has been adamant to modify the initiative and even cede lithium, because he spoke of reforming the Mining Law so that is extracted only by the state.

And the fact is that the chief executive has emphasized that lithium will be for Mexicans, since in 2019, the discovery of the largest deposit in the world in the northwest of Sonora, in the municipality of Bacadéhuachi, on the border with Chihuahua, was announced, which was estimated at 243.8 million tons of ore.

In addition to this, the United States declared, last year, that Mexican soil has 1.7 million tons of lithium mining reserves. And this mineral is mainly used for the manufacture of batteries.

However, a comment by South African businessman and millionaire Elon Musk drew attention, stating that if lithium prices were not lowered, his company Tesla would have to dedicate itself to the extraction and refinement of raw materials.

This is because the mineral is essential for the manufacture of batteries for electric cars that the company makes. So the controversial businessman, very fond of sharing his ideas on his official Twitter account, shared a thread in which he talked about the price hike after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Faced with this publication, the federal deputy for the parliamentary bench of the Morena Regeneration Movement party (Morena), Miguel Torruco Garza, warned that the country's lithium should be defended through the Electricity Reform.

In his official profile on the same social network, he quoted the comment of the owner of Tesla: 'Elon Musk; “The price of lithium has reached levels of insanity! Tesla may have to enter mining and refining directly at scale, unless costs improve.” Today more than ever we must protect our LITHIUM with the Electricity Reform. '

Although it should be noted that the South African specified that while metal is almost everywhere, there was a large reserve in Nevada within the United States and that he already had ideas for sustainable exploitation.

But we must also remember one of the most controversial comments by the richest businessman in the world, when in a discussion on Twitter he said that “We will give a coup to whoever we want! ” after being repudiated as one of the benefactors of the coup d'état against Evo Morales to obtain lithium in Bolivia.

On the other hand, Torruco Garza has expressed his support for the acceptance of the Energy Reform and even expressed his disagreement with the appearance of the Italian businessman Paolo Salerno from the energy company Enel Group, who caused a commotion among the deputies, mainly Morena.

“What is a lobbyist of an energy transnational doing sitting with a PRD deputy in the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies? We demand that you leave and respect the sovereignty of the Chamber of Deputies and especially the people of Mexico,” said the secretary of the Foreign Relations Committee.

Following this, the president of the Chamber of Deputies and deputy for Morena, Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, issued a statement calling for lobbyists not to enter the lower house.
