Several UN officials called on Monday in the Security Council to investigate violence against women in the war waged after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and demanded to protect children.

We are increasingly hearing about rape and sexual violence,” said Sima Bahous, director of UN Women. “These complaints must be the subject of an independent investigation to ensure justice and find accountable,” he claimed.

Officials also asked to stop the Russian invasion. “This war must stop. Now,” Bahous emphasized.

It's time to end this war. Children in Ukraine cannot afford to wait,” said Manuel Fontaine, director of UNICEF's emergency program.

Bahous, who returned from a trip to the conflict region, said that “the combination of mass displacement with the widespread presence of conscripts and mercenaries and brutality against Ukrainian civilians has raised all the warning signs.”

Fontaine warned about the risk of hunger in Ukraine. “Of the estimated 3.2 million children who are still at home, almost half do not have enough to eat,” he estimated.

“The situation is worse in cities like Mariupol and Kherson where children and their families spend weeks without running water, sanitation, regular food supply and medical care,” he added.

Prior to the meeting, Norwegian Ambassador to the UN, Monu Juul, emphasized the lack of school education.

Juul, whose country is a non-permanent member of the Security Council, said that 5.7 million Ukrainian children are affected by school closures and have nowhere to be.

Schools are important, not only for the education of children but also for protecting them from violence, sexual abuse and even trafficking in human beings,” he said.

“Children are innocent. Always. Stop killing them. Stop destroying your future. Stop the war!”, he remarked.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian authorities have accused the Russian troops present of engaging in selective sexual violence against Ukrainian women and girls, having found several bodies of naked women on the side of a road not far from Kiev.

“Women will not be raped. Children won't have to watch their mothers get raped. Civilians will not be killed,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, adding that Ukraine needs support to achieve this: “We need weapons, now,” he stressed.

The deputy mayor of Ivankiv, Maryna Beschastna, spoke of an episode in which two Ukrainian sisters aged 15 and 16 were raped by Russian soldiers and could not hold back their tears, the Express newspaper reported.
