The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, will meet this Friday in Kiev with the President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, a spokesman for the Ukrainian leader said, according to the Ukrinform portal.

The purpose of the visit is to address the fifth package of sanctions against Russia that is being prepared at European level and which, according to the EC proposal, will include the embargo on imports of Russian coal.

“It will not be the last package of sanctions,” said the Ukrainian president's spokesman.

Last Tuesday, the Community Executive announced the intention of Von der Leyen and the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, to travel to Kiev this week.

The visit to the Ukrainian capital will precede the Stand Up for Ukraine event, which will take place on Saturday in Warsaw and which will also be attended by Von der Leyen and Borrell.

Slovenian Prime Minister Janza will also be part of the delegation.

The first visit of Von der Leyen and Borrell to Ukraine since the Russian invasion of Ukraine comes under the impact of the massacres of civilians revealed in Bucha, in the Kiev region, and after both Brussels and other community partners, such as Germany, have accused the Kremlin of war crimes.

Earlier, on March 15, Polish Prime Ministers Mateusz Morawiecki; Slovenia Janez Jansa; and Czech Republic Petr Fiala traveled together to Kiev, where they also met with Zelensky to illustrate their support for resistance against the Russian invasion.
