On Windows computers, the “Print Screen” key is the basic tool for taking screenshots and also a direct way to extract images from videos. On Macs, the “Shift+Command+3" key combination does this.

However, with the screenshot, which is saved in the cache, you always have to take annoying deviations through image editing to be able to store the selected frames.

The free application VLC Media Player, a Swiss army knife for playing movies, has been specially designed to generate screenshots of movies and video files. All you have to do is pause at the desired point and then select from the “Video” menu the “Take video snapshot” category.

The storage location and file format (jpg, png, tiff) of snapshots can be changed in the menu under “Tools/Settings/Video/Video Snapshots”. The VLC player is not only available for Windows, Linux and macOS, but also for iOS and Android.

However, on smartphones and tablets, VLC does not support video snapshots. On these devices, it is usually enough to press the on/off buttons and volume down (Android) or volume up (iOS) at the same time.

The screenshot goes directly to the photo gallery, unless you press the thumbnail, which usually appears briefly. Then, depending on the mobile phone model, you can edit the screenshot immediately or save it in other formats.
