Who are the “friends of Putin” Mexican politicians who could be left without a US visa

The US Congress proposed to Joe Biden's government to remove the visa from the legislators who at the end of March implemented the Mexico-Russia Friendship Group

Regardless of the six weeks of Russia's war attacks on Ukraine; nor the fatalities in that eastern European country number in the hundreds; nor the international pressure to condemn those already investigated as war crimes, just over a dozen MPs stand as “friends” of the Kremlin. A month of Russian outrage had already passed when politicians such as petists Gerardo Fernández Noroña or Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez, regardless of the current context, established the so-called Mexico-Russia Friendship Group. These actions generated controversy inside and outside Mexico. In the latest pronouncement, the same US Congress, a country that has condemned the Russian attacks on Ukraine since the first minute, proposed to remove visas from these Mexican politicians so that they are not allowed to enter US territory.

But who are the Mexican politicians who could be left without permission to enter the United States?

Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez: deputy and president of the Labour Party (PT), promoter of friendship groups with Russia and Cuba.

undefined

Gerardo Fernández Noroña: Founder of the PRD and current deputy of the PT, “It seems that they have not known that we are an independent and sovereign nation,” he said of the United States. The politician has previously caused controversy because of his “left” tendency and sympathy. One of the most notable occasions was in early 2021, when he traveled to Venezuela to attend that country's National Assembly, where he met with Nicolás Maduro.

Augusto Gómez Villanueva: PRI deputy, argued “respect for the sovereignty of peoples and their self-determination” after endorsing ties with Russia.

undefined

Armando Castillo Contreras: deputy of Morena, originally from Oaxaca.

undefined

Margarita García García: deputy of the PT, originally from Oaxaca.

undefined

Nelly Maceda Carrera: deputy of the PT, originally from Puebla.

The other legislators who appear on the blacklist promoted by Texas Democratic Congressman Vicente González are Francisco Javier Huacus Esquivel of the PRD; Armando Reyes Ledezma, Reginaldo Sandoval Flores, Angel Benjamin Robles Montoya, Maribel Martinez Ruiz, Jesús Fernando García Hernandez and Ana Bernal Camarena of the PT.

The Democratic congressman accuses Mexicans of complicity “to avoid the free world and have chosen to be on the side of tyranny,” for which he asked that 25 Mexican politicians who met with the Russian ambassador to Mexico, Viktor Koronelli, be revoked their visas to enter his country. “If these individuals refuse to condemn Russia and instead choose to support tyranny, they should not be allowed the privilege of entering, traveling or investing in the United States.”

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), who has remained neutral in the face of the conflict, rejected this measure on Wednesday. “I don't see well, I don't think it's fair and I don't think it's rational to want to suspend visas for those who met to express their views regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.” The president added that, if such a measure was carried out, the Federal Government would send a diplomatic note in protest.

It should be noted that, within its policy, one of the reasons why the United States resorts to the revocation of visas for foreigners to enter its territory is that they are considered enemies or undesirable persons.
