Juan David Correa Toro and his brothers Luis Carlos and Jorge, created the EatCloud platform in 2019, with which, in 17 months, they managed to save 27 million dollars due to food loss in Colombia. Similarly, during the pandemic, its management prevented the waste of 4,500 tons of food, which were delivered to low-income people.
The motivation that parents had for this idea was to put technology at the service of society and thereby achieve an impact “on the development of the economy as well as in overcoming various social problems,” reported the National University of Colombia (UNAL) where Juan David graduated.
“More than 20 years ago we had a technology development company and we had always worked on processes that were very focused on the food industry. However, one of our international customers told us that they were burning more than 6 billion pesos of food that they could not sell, and the figure was scandalous to us, so we began to investigate why this was happening. We found that this is a widespread problem in the world, that the figure was not isolated, so we started looking for a solution,” commented the administrative engineer and software development specialist.
This is how the platform uses artificial intelligence to connect “large sources of food (restaurants, hotels and retail chains) with the social ecosystem, where food banks and foundations serving vulnerable populations are located.”

After that, and identifying the food before it runs the risk of being discarded, it “selects the ideal beneficiary based on parameters such as proximity, consumption volume and affinity with the beneficiary population”. So, when the food can already be donated, “we meet the most suitable foundation, which uses the application to see the available food and schedule its collection.”
“Through food banks, which is a network dedicated to rescuing food, we begin to articulate a social ecosystem through which we enter the banks all this food that is generated in different channels, so that they can serve the vulnerable population,” Toro explained, and at the same time he said:
But how does the business model make money, well, the platform charges the partner companies for the rental of the software and itself, as well as for the analysis of the losses.
The idea of the three Colombians has been so striking that it was included in the list of the renowned Forbes magazine, specialized in economics, where it details the 30 business promises in Colombia for 2022.
