Musician Tony Succar has been making history in the Peruvian music industry after being nominated for a grammy for his album “Live In Peru”, a work that was recorded at the Teatro Nacional in Lima. Given this, international media turn their gaze to our compatriot, as is the case with CNN es Español, which has made a note about the music of our artist, highlighting his source of inspiration.
As you remember, Succar is nominated in the category “Best Latin Tropical Album”, where Rubén Blades competes with “Salswing!” , Gilberto Santa Rosa with “Compadres”, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico for “Quarantine” and Aymée Nuviola for “Without Salsa there is no paradise”.
“One of the things that impresses when listening to the production is that it includes a tribute to Michael Jackson, with versions of classics such as “Billie Jean” brought to salsa. Who knew 'Smooth Criminal' would sound so good with timpani!” , can be read in the interview they did with the Grammy candidate.
Given this, Succar does not hesitate to emphasize that his “album encapsulates everything I have done in my career and is an album that was recorded 100% live in Peru, at the Gran Teatro Nacional in Lima. A whole band of 40 musicians, a spectacular thing.”
“It's a very nice thing, because you know it's the first time I've been nominated for the Anglo-Saxon Grammy. So I have a pride deep inside my heart, because it represented Peru, it represented my country, it represented the new generation of salseros, it fills me with a lot of pride, a lot of excitement that I am there competing against the greats of salsa like the Rubén Blades”, he added.

IMPRESSED WITH LIVE IN PERU
The media outlets highlight how atypical it can be to hear Michael Jackson or Bruno Mars taken to salsa, a genre so Caribbean and far from the original genres in which these artists move or performed, however, only Tony Succar succeeded in doing so on his nominated album Live in Peru, which featured the collaboration by Jean Rodriguez, Angel Lopez, Debi Nova, Daniela Darcourt, Gian Marco, among others.
“The repertoire I did for that show, I have Michael Jackson's versions of the Unity project, so we have songs like Billie Jean, I Want You Back with the Jackson Five, all with new arrangements, salsa arrangements, with incredible energy. But we also have songs from the Más de me album, which won both Latin Grammys,” he explained.
It should be remembered that “Más de me” is the production that in 2019 made Tony Succar the winner of “Producer of the Year” and “Best Salsa Album” at the Latin Grammys.
At another point in the interview, the artist was consulted by Michael Jackson as a source of inspiration. It should be remembered that before becoming an artist, our compatriot was a fan of the late singer.
“Michael Jackson for me first of all is the greatest pop artist that ever lived, the king of pop, and then, as he has had such an influence on my career, not only as a musician, but as a guy who has done a lot of things, his message in songs, that he has talked about no to racism, discrimination, caring for the planet and all that stuff they also impacted me emotionally,” Succar told Zona Pop CNN.
“I think everyone in the music industry knows Michael Jackson and respects him for that, because his music and art was the best and as Latinos he needed a tribute, a tribute like that, cool. And it has many things similar to salsa, because its music was very danceable and salsa is very danceable, it lends itself to each other,” said the percussionist, who after being asked to hear a lot of salsa in Peru, very proudly replied: “In Peru you listen to a lot of salsa.” “Callao is supersalsero,” he concluded.
