Twenty-one years after the premiere of Mini Spies (Spy Kids), Robert Rodriguez will direct the reboot of this action-adventure franchise about a family of secret agents. Although no details of the plot are known, it is known that Rodriguez will also be in charge of the script and that the company that owns the brand, Skydance Media, had recently explored how to reimagine the history of the Cortez, including the possibility that they were a multicultural family.

Netflix, which will be in charge of the project that will update the hit that starred Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, starred in, made the announcement on his Twitter account for Latin America:

The story of Ingrid and Gregorio Cortez began when they both worked for the Organization of Super Spies (OSS), which they left to start a family. Their children Carmen and Juni don't know that past from their parents, whom they see as boring people. After a special mission that the OSS asks them to accept, Ingrid and Gregorio return to their old trade and soon integrate the next generation into the family metier.

The film grossed $147 million in 2001, and at a cost of $35 it was a huge success. It was followed by the sequels Mini Spies 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (The Island of Lost Dreams, 2002), Mini Spies 3-D (Game Over, 2003) and Mini Spies 4: The Thieves of Time (All the Time in the World, 2011), starring Jessica Alba and Joel McHale in the roles of the parents). In total, the film has generated revenues of more than $550 million.

Rodriguez is a very versatile filmmaker, perhaps best known for action and abundant blood titles, such as Sin City, Battle Angel: The Last Warrior (Alita: Battle Angel), Machete or From Dusk Till Dawn. But he has also done works for the whole family such as We Can Be Heroes, he has been an executive producer of The Book of Boba Fett, and has worked with Billie Eilish on Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles.

“Those of us who have children have a duality: you are one when you are with your colleagues playing pool and you are another person at home with your children,” he once said. “When I go out with my friends we are Sin City or Machete, but when I am at home with my children I am Mini Spies.”

David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will be producers on behalf of Skydance (The Adam Project, Top Gun), and will be accompanied by Elizabeth Avellan and Racer Max. Gary Barber, co-founder of Spyglass, the company that sold the rights to Skydance, will also executive produce alongside Peter Oillataguerre.
