Querétaro, where on March 5 there was a pitched battle between fans of the local team and the Atlas at La Corregidora Stadium, was announced this Tuesday as the venue of the first European Champions League 'Fan Festival' outside this continent.
The event will be held at the Olympic Stadium where the Champions League final will be broadcast live on May 28, which will take place at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France.
The festival will be attended by former footballers and at the moment Rafael Márquez, who won two Champions Leagues with Spanish Barcelona, is confirmed.
Mauricio Torres, one of the organizers of the event, thanked the facilities provided by the Querétaro authorities and stressed that this will be the first time that this event will be held in a country outside Europe.
“We are proud to bring an event of this magnitude to our country and we thank Querétaro for opening the doors of its newly renovated Olympic Stadium to host this great Champions League Fan Festival Mexico,” said the businessman.
The final will be broadcast on a 223-square-meter screen.
“With UEFA we have a very serious contract in which we are going to reveal the participants who will be present as the 'Champions' tournament progresses. Some are going to have to play and others are going to have to play in the final, those unfortunately won't be able to come,” said Torres.
Querétaro gave the note since March 5 for the violent events in La Corregidora that left 26 injured in addition to more than 30 detainees, including three policemen.
In addition, the local team, Los Gallos Blancos de Querétaro, was punished with sanctions such as a fine of about 75,000 dollars, not being able to play for a year with the public their matches and a change of owners.
