Germán “N”, a prisoner of the North Prison, received a law degree from the Autonomous University of Mexico City (UACM) after successfully completing his studies inside the prison.

In a statement, the Secretary of Citizen Security of Mexico City (SSC) reported on the presentation of the title to the prisoner by the school authorities of the capital's university, who also handed a certificate of completion of studies to Claudia “N”, an inmate of the Santa Martha women's prison Acatitla.

The prisoner began and completed his studies inside the North Prison, adding to the 204 persons deprived of their liberty who are part of the UACM university enrollment, of whom 95 have already received a certificate of completion of studies, while 19 have joined school activities on the premises after regaining his freedom.

“With this degree, 58 people have been deprived of liberty in prisons in the capital in recent years; of which 35 have been by the UACM and 23 by other institutions such as UNAM, IPN, University of the Valley of Mexico, among other public and private universities,” the SSC reported.

In addition, the National Institute for Adult Education (INEA) awarded 18 certificates of education at different levels to prisoners who are registered at the Men's Prison Security Center II (Cevasep), which maintains an enrollment of 392 persons deprived of their liberty who study at the primary level, as well as 617 in secondary school.

According to information provided by the capital authorities, around 7,600 people are currently studying inside the prisons located in the country's capital, ranging from literacy to postgraduate studies.

The SSC Undersecretary of the Penitentiary System, Enrique Cerrano, was present at the event to award certificates and professional qualifications, who announced that the UACM currently has 1,361 persons deprived of their liberty in the city, in addition to highlighting that 11 people have obtained Master's Degrees in Law Procedural after studying postgraduate studies inside a capital penitentiary center.

Although prisoners in Mexico City have opportunities to develop and reintegrate into society, most people deprived of their liberty in the interior of the republic live another reality, as they face a hard existence day by day.

The macabre discovery of the body of a three-month-old baby, eight dead prisoners, 62 wounded and 13 detained officials are the figures left by the three incidents in Mexican prisons recorded in the first month of 2022, data that reflect the harsh picture faced by thousands of people deprived of their liberty in the System Mexico Penitentiary.

“The situation of the penitentiary system is disastrous,” said the former director of Prevention and Social Readaptation of Cereso de Colima, José Abel Saucedo Romero, when he spoke of the mutiny in which eight prisoners lost their lives and seven more were injured, the third relevant incident occurred in Mexican prisons in the first 25 days of the year.

The self-government of the prisoners, the overcrowding to which they are subjected on most occasions and the conflicts arising from the operation of various mafias inside prisons are the causes that, according to the security expert, led the inmates to star in a riot on Tuesday, January 25, in which firearms were used and knives.
