The Citizen Movement (MC) bench in the Chamber of Deputies demonstrated against the installation of the Mexico-Russia Friendship Group, as they considered as a “reckless” and “unnecessary” act in the context of the invasion against the people of Ukraine.

This Wednesday, March 23, the United Benches of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), the Labor Party (PT) and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) installed the Group to establish a diplomatic link between the federal legislature and the Russian Federation to discuss issues of the situation of the conflict in Ukraine and strengthen ties in the bilateral relationship.

Consequently, the orange bench held a peaceful and symbolic demonstration on the outskirts of the Group's installation, which was led by Jorge Álvarez Máynez, MC coordinator in San Lázaro. In addition, he was accompanied by other legislators: Rocío Banquells, Elvia Martinez Cossío, Maria Alvarez, Amalia García (representative of the Citizen Movement in the Committee on Foreign Relations), Solomon Chertorivski (member of the Mexico-Ukraine Friendship Group), Manuel Herrera, Julieta Mejía and Irisay Rodríguez.

According to Álvarez Máynez and his co-affiliates, the installation of this body, during an active invasion, is an act of impertinence and parliamentary influence, since the only mechanism that exists in the Chamber of Deputies to act in a diplomatic manner was activated.

In this regard, he reiterated that what is happening on Ukrainian territory is condemnable, since it is not a war in which there is a dispute between two nations, but rather it is an invasion by a power the size of Russia against a sovereign country, whereby part of the victims on European territory consist of civilians: “we think it is reckless, which is, moreover, unnecessary”.

He also said that it seems that, with the installation of this Friendship Group, an erroneous message is being sent by the Mexican State to the world, or at least contradictory to the official position, since Juan Ramón de la Fuente, representative of Mexico to the United Nations (UN), condemned the hostilities on Ukrainian territory on two occasions: once before the UN Security Council and the second before the Plenary of that organization.

Similarly, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has called for a peaceful resolution that respects, above all, human integrity. This message has been reiterated by Marcelo Ebrard, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), and the rest of his cabinet.

We don't have a conflict between two people responsible. There is a clear invader, a clear aggressor and a clear people who are doing innocently massacred,” said the MC deputy, calling for the suspension of the Friendship Group while the conflict is active.

On her own, Chertorivski Woldenberg reiterated that “there is one aggressor and one attacked, there is a violator and a victim” and considered that this is an invasion that gives way to a new reality in the world, since in a short time 3 million people were displaced; however, she reiterated that her stance against the Group is not against the population Russian.

On the other side of the coin, Alberto Anaya, a deputy for the PT and president of the Mexico-Russia Friendship Group, said that Mexico maintains a role of peace and neutrality and voted for “a diplomatic agreement and a peaceful exit where the parties put down their arms.” Regarding Mexico-Russia relations, the legislator noted the trade that amounts to USD 4.7 billion annually.
