At the time of the key match for the Qatar 2022 Qualifiers between Peru vs. Uruguay, former World Cup player and Universitario de Deportes idol Germán Leguía, pointed out that the 'bicolor' has earned respect for the matches it has made to fight its ticket to the World Cup. “The match in Montevideo is won by doing what this national team does. Everybody running and not afraid of him. Uruguay respects us, Peru has won that. When it enters a field it is not the small team, we are on equal terms,” he told Canal N.

He mentioned that Peru must maintain character to beat Uruguay today in Montevideo with a solid defense. In this regard, he highlighted the Peruvian defense that considers it one of the best in South America.

“Peru's defense has been one of the best. Gallese is considered one of the best archers in America (...) After Rodriguez, I consider him Zambrano. It comes from playing well in Argentina. Everything is built from behind. They must remain united and avoid being scored fast,” he added.

About the match, he said he expects an impartial referee and that he is worried about striker Luis Suárez because “he is going to throw himself all day” and “will take advantage let people put pressure on the referee.” “I hope the referee is impartial and it will be a good match. Uruguay has a big problem like in Colombia. If things don't go well, people are going to 'squeeze' him,” he concluded.

ABOUT GERMÁN LEGUÍA

Former Peruvian footballer Germán Leguía was born on January 2, 1954. He was a World Cup player with his country in Argentina '78 and Spain '82. He played for Universitario de Deportes in two periods (1978 -1983 and 1989-1990). In an interview with Bundesliga en Español he pointed out the strengths of the Peruvian national team was preparing the return of Bicolor to a World Cup after 36 years (Russia 2018).

“It is a team that has humility, a lot of union between the players and the credibility that the coach has. There are many players that no one believed in and Gareca called them, supported them and they have achieved World Cup qualification. They love Ricardo very much and they are going to 'kill' for him. It's a close-knit group. There is nothing worse than disunity and I lived it in the '82 World Cup. Now the substitutes celebrate goals more than the players who are on the field of play,” he said.
