At the end of January it was announced that Gregorio Pérez had to be operated on for a problem in his heart, after undergoing surgery he decided to get away from football and stop coaching in University of Sports. Now, after two months, the Uruguayan spoke about the possibility of returning to direct and ruled out being on a bench due to complications in his health.
“It's going to be difficult for me to lead again, we have to be aware that we are living in a borderline situation and that we can happily tell about it. But now, beyond the passion we feel, it will be difficult to have that adrenaline, perhaps we can take another path within it, but not with the obligations that I had, because we have to take care of ourselves to enjoy life,” he said exclusively for Ovación.
“I'm going to tell you something so you know. The last journalist I spoke to here in Peru was with you and what I am going to say to you is not going to believe me. When I rolled down the window (to give statements), I couldn't even speak, I was already infarcted, I already had a heart attack upstairs and I was up until the next day with the heart attack that took me to the clinic in the afternoon,” were his last words to a local media outlet.
Despite not being able to live that long-standing passion so close, he knows the bad situation that his last club is going through: Universitario. In addition, he took the opportunity to defend his compatriot Gutiérrez, who suffered a further defeat to Binacional last Sunday.
“Álvaro (Gutiérrez) came to Universitario with the championship started and without knowledge, beyond that we talked and answered the questions about the squad, but everything takes a while of knowledge to adapt and get to know each player,” he said.

HIS OPINION OF PERU VS. Uruguay
The Peruvian national team will face Uruguay next Thursday, March 24 at 18:30 (Peruvian time) at Centenario Stadium. Therefore, Pérez gave his opinion of this duel that will be important thinking about qualifying for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
“Peru - Uruguay is a decisive match, it is a final because of how the two teams arrive. Beyond the fact that Uruguay is local and has the fans, Peru has managed to reverse scores as visitors,” he replied.
On the other hand, he spoke of the role of Diego Alonso, the new coach of the 'celeste'. “The changes produce different motivations. If you see, the squad that plays these qualifying matches is the same as Tabarez had, but there was an injection of mind, which achieved two very important results to place itself where it is today in the qualifiers.”
Finally, he affirmed his desire for Uruguay to beat Peru in Montevideo. “Will my heart be divided this Thursday? I am not a demagogue and they know perfectly well who would like me to win.”
