Diana Osorio, first lady of Medellín, had sounded like one of the possibilities for the vice-presidential formula of the Historical Pact to accompany Gustavo Petro's candidacy, but that share of Daniel Quintero's sector would not be considered.
This Tuesday will be the official announcement of the vice-presidential candidate who will accompany Petro, although it has already been unofficially announced, according to the same candidate and Gustavo Bolivar, that it would be Francia Márquez, who placed second in the Pact consultation and the third most voted candidate of all coalitions. That would leave out people like Osorio or María Emma Mejia who were in consideration.
“If Antioquia changes, Colombia changes,” Osorio wrote on his Twitter account this weekend, the slogan of the Antioquia candidates of the Historical Pact, but the legislative results and consultations of March 13 do not adhere to that proposal.
In the House for Medellín, the most voted party was the Democratic Center, followed by the Pact with more than 100,000 votes below. In the rest of the municipalities of Antioquia, the Pact was not imposed either and he led the Uribism along with the Liberal.
As for the consultation, the coalition of the Team for Colombia had the most votes with 2,063 and the Historical Pact only 1,088. According to the newspaper El Colombiano, these results were lower than those achieved by Petro in the 2018 presidential elections in that department and three times less than what Daniel Quintero obtained in the mayoral campaign.
In that sense, the Antioquia newspaper argues, Osorio lost ground to be vice-presidential formula, since Quintero's union with the Covenant is no secret. The mayor voted for that consultation last Sunday and won a senate seat with Alex Flórez, who was his bishop on the city council.
According to a source cited by the news report, in the Pact they realized that competing with former mayor Gutiérrez, it is more difficult for Petro to win over Antioquia's voters. In addition, having Quintero's wife in his proposal could drag the polarization that has been generated around him in the city by the recall promoted by Uribism and the management of EPM.
Even so, Osorio has power in itself in the city. She declared herself as manager since Quintero's possession and has led several programs and, according to El Colombiano, she has been decisive in the formation of the cabinet, such as the appointment of her first Juan Carlos Upegui to the Secretariat of Non-Violence. A subject handled by the first lady with a postgraduate degree in post-conflict.
Osorio has been a strong defender of her husband in the midst of the controversies she has faced in the mayor's office. She has engaged in fights with Sergio Fajardo and Álvaro Uribe and, according to El Tiempo, close to the administration, she says she has ample power despite not being a civil servant.
In an interview with that media outlet, he assured in December that a false story had been created regarding his aspiration to the House of Representatives for the Historical Pact. In addition, he does not like politics from the front, but only next to Quintero.
After the March 13 elections, Osorio wrote on his social networks: “Congratulations to Francia Márquez, a woman from the Caucan countryside, a land that has lived and mourned the conflict. The change is already felt.”
Possibly the Caucan leader is Petro's vice-presidential formula, in recognition of the electoral surprise that her result meant in the consultation and the sectors which it represents since its struggle for communities.
