Corsican activist Yvan Colonna, who had been the subject of a beating this month in a prison in the south of France, which led to heavy unrest on the French island of the Mediterranean, died, his family announced Monday.

Colonna, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the 1998 murder of Prefect Claude Erignac, died Monday in a hospital in Marseille, in the south of France, her lawyer, Patrice Spinosi, told AFP, conveying a message from her family.
