INDIAN WELLS, California, USA (AP) — Poland's Iga Swiatek defeated Greek Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-1 on Sunday in an error-filled final to win the Indian Wells Open.

The triumph will allow Swiatek to place second, the best of his career, in the ranking that the WTA Tour will announce on Monday. The 20-year-old Polish will only be below number one in the world, Ash Barty, who did not participate in Indian Wells. Sakkari will climb to the third rung, making her the best placed Greek star in the ranking so far.

The bursts affected the service and shots of both players. There were seven service breaks in the first set alone, in which Swiatek kept him on a couple of occasions. Sakkari rescued his serve once to tie the set 4-4.

Swiatek won the next game to go up 5-4. Sakkari was 40-30 in favor of his serve, but a double fault gave Swiatek his third break point, and he took the set with a setback from Sakkari who stayed on the net.

Swiatek broke his rival's serve twice in the second set to take 5-1 lead. He defined with a right shot to the corner of the bottom line.

Swiatek won a prize of $1.2 million by improving his record this year to 20-3, the best in the WTA, including 11 wins in a row.

In the men's final, Spaniard Rafael Nadal meets American Taylor Fritz.
